1st of all, there is mirror lockup automatically for all 2sec timer shooting. it's a smart design.
Before buying *istDS, i considered D70 and 300D too. So the following passage is comparing these 3 DSLRs.
The best selling pt of *istDS is not only the compact size, but also the big viewfinder! IMHO, one of the most important part of a DSLR/SLR and what distinguishes DSLR from a prosumer DC is the optical viewfinder. No matter how big the LCD is (by the way the LCD of *ist DS is very biggest and has highest resolution), you can only use the viewfinder to do framing. Thus if it's as small as D70 or 300D (their viewfinders are similar in size because although 300D is 0.8x, 300D's sensor is smaller), u can't really see the detail of the object you are taking and you can't manual focus, which is important since DSLR uses TTL autofocus and it's difficult for it to autofocus if the lens is slow (max aperture is small) and it's low light situation. And *ist DS uses matte focus screen, which helps manual focus a lot. It's difficult to describe... you may go to compare with D70 and 300D in Broadway.
I also like D70 but besides the very small viewfinder (which is unacceptable for me) and the big body (personally I like small body), D70 can't use the old lenses. As i'm not a rich guy, i wanna buy 2nd hand lenses. So D70 is not suitable to me. However, besides those points, D70 is nice.
The main pts i don't like 300D are the lack of features and plactic feeling. Even cracked, you can't select metering mode! I'm not going to buy a point-and-shoot... and it's slow in startup and continuous mode. and canon's cmos is relatively soft.
Besides the biggest viewfinder (0.95x vs 0.75x), the other advantages of *istDS over D70 and 300D are:
- small (just similar to the size of FZ20)
- metal frame body (inside the plastic coating)
- AA batteries
- in-camera digital filters: black&white, "brown color", soft (I don't like and never postprocess)
- color mode selection: "bright" for direct output or "nature" for postprocess (D70 has color tone curve! better!!)
- big and high-resolution LCD
- 11-pt autofocus (but i don't use it often)
- still finding...
in addition, there are 2 big camera bags (can store few lenses) and a solid tripod as free gifts for buying *istDS + kit lens 18-55 now

缺點:
What i don't like *ist DS:
- pentax lenses is not common!
- pentax's autofocus system is relatively slow
- there are not a lot of buttons, so you need to use the LCD a lot.

此機最大買點是細、輕、平。
其實我就話Pro、靚、正，加上超低的價格
$6980送256SD咭(超吸引)
試過部機後發覺原來平?無好??錯。因部機實在太正，白平衡好、色彩準確、閃燈夠勁、起動超快、對焦同樣令人滿意。
用AA電，方便
跟機支鏡不過不失，可以接受

優點:
因工作關係，這部是本人公司繼300D、D70後，第三部DSLR。現比較如下:
起動快過300D。
白平衡OK。好過D70好多好多，特別响光管之下，D70嚴重偏青。
曝光OK，但個人認為 EV +1/3 重好。
LCD夠大又超清，但比相片光少少。小心。
閃光燈夠力 (好過D70)

用AA電，令整部機變重，和300D差不多。
