although there are some shared features with models like the EOS 10D. It's probably worth illustrating here how we define the market for our digital cameras. Think of the market as a pyramid with the Professional at the very top. For the Professionals we design the EOS-1 Series. They are the ultimate in functionality and durability but they are expensive for amateur use. Then the next layer down is the semi pro / advanced amateur. They need most of the functionality of the pro series but the equipment is generally used under slightly less arduous conditions and the camera itself can be a bit smaller. At the bottom of the pyramid, but actually largest in terms of sales are the digital compacts. They don't have the functionality of a digital SLR of course but they are ideal for general use.

Now the arrival of the EOS 300D creates a new niche between the general market served by digital compacts and the advanced amateur/semi-pro. We believe there are a large number of keen photographers who would like the functionality and performance of a digital SLR but for many the cost of an EOS 10D is probably still beyond reach. With the EOS 300D we think many users with EOS cameras who use film may well be interested enough to consider a digital SLR for the first time.
