14x zoom by Olympus C-770 UZ Post time: 4 月 29 日 |

I have read some article posted in dpreview.com. There is also lens movement for the extra 4x. This seems amazing.
The 14x opticle zoom is actually the 10x outer lens movement plus 4x inner lens movement. As the inner lens move closer to the CCD surface, the usable CCD area is only concentrate at the centre part, ie 1600 x 1200 CCD will be used.
Here is the message from Mike_PEAT wrote in dpreview.com.

Here's my theory of how the 1600x1200 Super Zoom mode works...out of the entire 2288 x 1712 CCD only the centre 1600x1200 pixels are used, I think the camera uses only the centre 1600x1200 pixels to create the image. Therefore, the incoming image doesn't have to be spread over the whole CCD...the lens can come closer to the CCD and vignette the image in sections of the CCD that are unused.
Being a projectionist at a camera club, I have to deal with this all the time when setting up a projector and making sure the image doesn't go beyond the viewable area (the screen)...of course this is opposite of photography where the image does go beyond the frame of the CCD (or film); you just don't see it. If the viewable area is smaller, the lens has to closer to the screen or it will overshoot it. Again with the CCD, since only the centre is used, the inner lens can be closer to the CCD since there's no need to care about the unsused pixels of the rest of the CCD, and that gives you the extra 4x zoom.
The easiest thing to do is move the lens to the 10x position in regular zoom, switch to Super Zoom mode, and then look in the lens to see if it moves further in when you hit the "T"ele control.
