The following are my priority (from most important to least important)

1. check external appearance, if there are signs of finger print, this is also not a new lens.

2. make sure the contacts on the lens' metal ring & gold fingers are BRAND NEW, no any scratch on the lens' "metal contact", if there is scratch on the metal contacts, means the lens has been mounted on a SLR, this may indicate that the lens not 100% new. SOME guys will tell u that the lens is 100% new even if that is scratch on the contacts.... if u believe, u're on your own risk!

3. remove all lens front & back cap & see through lighted object (white one is better) to see any sign of dust inside [believe or not, even if there is dust inside, the lens can also take perfect picture, because these dust cannot focus on the image frame]

4. [CHECK FOCUS] mount the lens ON YOUR DSLR, focus infinity & min distances to see whether the lens can focus smoothly, no special sound; check the image if u notebook computer or just use the LCD to see

5. [CHECK ZOOM] if u have a flash with auto-zoom head, u can check whether the lens focal length information correct by letting the lens zoom, the flash zoom head should also zoom.

6. [CHECK F-STOP] use manual focus, set focus to infinity, AV exposure, point to a ALL white object, set different f-stops (e.g. F4 to F22), take pictures, if ALL the images (white all through),
