for Nikon, there is a selection for superfine/fine/normal something like that in addition to resolution. They recommend fine is good enough for 4R and you may need superfine if you develop 8R. Of course if you select surperfine, the file size will greatly increase. There is similar things in other brand, but they may call "compression" etc...
