DALIAN, China -- China could see 1 million new cases of lung cancer each year by 2025, according to a report from the World Health Organization citing the country's high smoking rate and poor air quality.

According to the World Cancer Report released by The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a United Nations body, various forms of the disease are spreading fast in China. Even though the country makes up only 19% of the world's population, it accounted for 36% of all lung cancer cases diagnosed in 2012, as well as 50% of newly diagnosed cases of liver cancer. China was also first in prevalence and morbidity for lung, stomach, liver and esophageal cancers.

In 2012, 650,000 of the 1.82 million people diagnosed with lung cancer were Chinese. The ongoing rise is largely attributable to the country's high smoking rate. Its 350 million smokers make China the world's largest cigarette consumer, and 53% of adult men there smoke.

The report, which says that more than 70% of Chinese citizens are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke, also suggests that air pollution from automobiles and factories is contributing to the increase in cancer rates.

Dr Dana Loomis, deputy head of a section at IARC responsible for identifying factors that cause cancer says
"air pollution levels increased dramatically during the last decades of the 20th Century, while the incidence of lung cancer started rising somewhat later and is still going up. Along with smoking, air pollution is one plausible explanation for the recent rise in lung cancer in China."

State magazine "News China" reported that 8.3 people a day were diagnosed with cancer in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, in 2009, a significant leap from 0.8 people in 1970.

The WHO estimates that 14 million people were diagnosed with cancer in 2012 worldwide. That figure is expected to grow to 22 million in the next two decades.

The report, which was drafted by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer, is the third edition following previous publications in 2003 and 2008.
