Hello everyone,

I am a beginner in DSLR and I have got a 500D with kit lens.

Last night I wanted to take photos of my baby at a wedding party in a hotel of which the light is very dim. I use Av mode and I set ISO to 1600 or 3200. D+ also set. Aperture sets to biggest (3.x). But the pictures are blurred. On the other hand, when I use night portrait, the pictures are a bit better (but very yellow). I would like to ask why night portrait mode can take sharper photos than Av mode?

night portrait 影出來都有快門光圈等setting info, 請參照你用av有什麼不同. b如果係因快門唔夠快做成既郁動, 你用night portrait mode 時係快門快D既.
點解快門快D? 有可能係測光既影響, 不同位置影, 測光不同, 快門改變了.

仲有可能係auto ISO, night portrait mode 幫你調到ISO 6400 或以上iso, 而使快門變快, iso 高會偏色都正常

why the night portrait mode looks sharper than the Av mode one?

What lens and focal length were you using ar? If the focal length was shorter when you were using night portrait mode, chances are you would have less hand shakes so slightly better result?

But either way, both shutter speed were too slow for handheld so the result weren't that good can be expected. You have better shot in night portrait mode mainly becasue you got lucky with less hand shakes....

And for your question.. night portrait doesn't make anything sharper, it's just auto settings vs user settings in AV. In your case, the auto settings in night portrait mode was able to calculate better settings than you did in AV mode, that's all.

I heard from some ching in this forum that shutter speed should no more than 1/60 sec, in that case, should I use Tv mode than Av mode for night time shooting? Or even M mode so that I can also fix the ISO in addition to the shutter speed?

Your case is poor lightings, the only option really are the followings:

1) Use faster prime lens.
2) Use tripod.
3) Use flash.

The general rule of thumb is to use at least the equal shutter speed as the focal length (i.e. 1/200 or faster when shooting at 200mm) to prevent hand shake. IS would aid to some degree, maybe one to two stops slower, and oh, you'd need to take into account the crop factor of the 500D as well.
