it depends on different lens, I have a 1988 Nikon 80-200/f2.8 very very sharp & very contrasty, no defect in coating, looks like new.

BUT a 28-70/f2.8L went foggy inside after around 5 years of usage.

more m42 MF Lens still in very good condition! its more than 30-40 years
