EF lens can be used for full film size and smaller size cmos
EF-S lens can only be used for smaller size cmos (like 400d, 30d...etc)

If I want to buy a standard lens, which one is better for Canon 400D and what is your suggestion.

- Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM
- Canon EF-S 17- 55mm f2.8 IS USM

it is difficult,
but i would prefer EF-S 17- 55mm f2.8 IS USM,
b/c it is IS version.

Since you have mentioned of getting a FF someday, EF 24-70mm F2.8L USM should be your cup of tea.
