A80 vs A1?

depends on budget and need la.

A1 has a lens zoom from 28-200 and aperture F/2.8-F/3.5, which is undoubtedly more verstile than A80 (38-114mm F/2.8-F/4.9) in both wide, tele-coverage and brightness.
and A1 also support external TTL flash, which I have found quite vital for indoor functions, if you want well and evenly lit flash pictures.
Also A1's AF speed is really comparable DSLR / SLR (according to the imaging-resource review, full AF to picture taken just take 0.6s).

Lets not mention the very fancy AS functionalities, all the above already make it a tool that improve the possibility of taking good pictures, haven't said that A80 is bad, but functionally its just a little limited, at least you probably cannot have effective control of DOF for portrait picture taking.

If my budget is limited, I think I will try to source a G3 from the state, they are selling for $400 there, which isn't a lot more expensive than A80, but the extra well worth the money for the 35-135mm F/2.0 to F/3.0 lens and external TTL flash compatibility, plus all the fancy functionalities like RAW format output, etc.etc.

Image quality wise, Canon at ISO 50 surely set the legend for the prosumer markets, but I do not see its miles ahead of all others including my Coolpix 5000 or the minolta's. And when quality does matter, I will shoot with my film gears.

Finally popularity may count in a lot other factors like style, and price, may not necessary reflect absolutely quality, so is Canon 10D, 1D and 1Ds not included in the result of the survey.

My little conclusion is still what you need and how much you would like to pay lor.
