I find every single extra mm at the wide end makes a huge difference to framing, whereas the mm at the tele end give a diminishing return.

Using the interesting FOV calculator you mention (good find!), my point can be illustrated like this:

The difference between 24mm and 28mm is 'just' 8.2 degrees.


But to get 8.2 degrees of difference at the tele end you're talking about the range between 136mm and 300mm! Most people would balk at sacrificing so much range because it sounds like a lot, but is no more or less significant than those four mm at the wide end.

I find the idea of a 24mm - 100mm f2.8 constant aperture S9500 with a 6MP SCCD sensor, internal focus / zoom very desireable. It'll never happen because people are AMAZED by the BIG numbers on the SUPERzooms!
