Dear brothers,

I am a DSLR newbie, just got my D50 and looking to buy a speedlight either SB600 or SB800.

I have the following questions:

1. Can I use the built-in flash to trigger a remote wireless SB600/800? I heard D70 can do.

2. If the answer is NO to #1, are there any ways I can do wireless speedlight on a D50?

3. Any recommendation on which one to buy - SB600 or SB800? I am a casual shooters only.

1) Yes, D50 built in flash can play wireless flash but will lose TTL (CLS) function :

You need to set D50 to manual flash mode, the remote slave flash (SB600 / 800) set to SU-4 mode, and need to manually set both built-in and remote flash output.

Pls note when SB600 / 800 turn to SU-4 as slave flash, it will be triggered by all kind of flash from other people DC.

2) If you need TTL wirelss flash, need one SB800 on D50 as master, and another SB800 / SB600 as remote slave.

Or buy D70s, D70s has flash command model for TTL remote flash. D200 built in flash also can be master TTL flash (D70s / D50 cannot)

3) Suggest SB800, if one day you buy / borrow one more SB600, then can play TTL wireless flash.

If just for casual shooter, then really no need to have wireless flash and SB800 at all…. $300 auto flash is already enough.

$300 auto flash + $80 wireless syn flash trigger can perform same function as SU-4 at SB800/600

Thanks for the quick reply. For #1, How's quality of the picture if using built-in flash trigger setup? Will there be delay on the slave flash after it senses the built-in flash firing?

Also what is the $80 wireless syn?

The quality of photo is not related to the flash / wireless flash, just setting of wireless flash will change the light effect in photo. So if setting is right, $300 auto flash is same as SB800.

Some people said the light temperature of cheap flash is not good, but at digital era we can set the white balance to match the flash light temperature.

When using manual flash mode at D50 or auto external flash (non TTL), there is no delay in remote slave flash. Instead it fires faster than TTL flash because TTL flash fires twice (pre-flash + main flash), non TTL fires once (main flash)
