correct me if i am wrong, as far as i remember ED lens use some sort of low dispersion lens, so its claimed to be better in optical quality.
among the two, i like the AF-S more, it is like Canon's USM, it focus with nearly no noise, and much faster.
and as a general rule of thumb, the less the zoom ratio, the better the quality, you can imagine it comprimse less in lens design.
and i like 24mm coverage more.
For portrait, I don't think any of these two are very suitable for the small aperture.
