D60 is very good. Not too late. Good price now at about $47xx in chain shops.

I rather buy D40 if you can find it, and save $$ for better lens.

D40 is great too. Before I bought my D60, I thought about whether I should get D40 or D60. Finally, I decided to get D60 because I want the dust removal mechanism on D60 and the VR function on the kit lens of D60. I saw D40 kit selling in one Fortress shop at $39xx. Good bargain.

But if you consider the additional value of VR function in D60 kit lens, the price of D60 kit is also very attractive.

Conclusion - both D40 kit and D60 kit are great buy. Pick one according to your needs.

The lens which comes with the D60 is already very good and suitable for most of the daily use. You may (or may not) only need a longer zoom like 55-250mm at $1xxxx.

buy D60, its a very good beginner DSLR, color more vivid than D80, lighter than D80, also buy the 55-200VR($1800-1900)

it cannot use old AF lens but all newly introduced nikon lenses are AF-S now

Yes, the colour produced by D60 is very rich. Beautiful.

There are more than enough lenses to match D60 for general use. But if you want to play with more lenses, then go for higher model like D80 or D90.
