Hi, I am new to this is forum, I just bought a D80 and would like to buy a lens for taking indoor pictures without flash. Best for taking indoor kid pictures.

Acutally, indoor kid or baby?? Indoor kid ---> moving around the room, need fast shutter speed. Baby ----> not moving around the room, can use lower shutter speed.

If you want to take indoor pictures, I think you can try 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 first. C/P value high. Not really expensive. Remember set larger perture and higher ISO to keep the shutter speed not too slow. ^_^

Since I am very new to SLR stuff, so would you suggest some good value lens with model name? I only bought a body, what kind of lens are the MUST for beginner?
I am expecting a baby girl in Oct, and would like to take some pictures when she born without flash in hospital.

Take 50mm f1.8 (about $800) or 50mm f1.4 (about $2,000 - yet heard that a replacement AF-S 50mm f1.4G is coming up soon)

If you have a D80, I would suggest the following lens depending on your own preference:

All around len:
Buy the nikon AFS 18-200mm DX VR first. It is an all around len which you do not need to change lens frequently. You can use it to photo in nearly all situations such as your baby, baby with family, and others. First hand price is around 4.8K and second hand price is around 4K. VR is very useful for dim light environment and AFS focus very fast.

Budget len:
First
Another len for new hand is nikon 50mm 1.8. Cheap with excellent quality. New only costs you around 780 and second hand costs you only 500. Large aperature so that you can use faster shutter speed in dim environment without flash. But it does not have AFS and VR.

Second
If you want quality with lesser cost, you can consider 副廠鏡, such as Tarmon or Sigma. I would suggest Tamron A09 28-75 2.8, only cost you around 2.8K for new. According to other C-Hings, its performance is upto 70%~80% of that of nikon which costs you around 10K for new. Again, this len does not have VR and AFS. For baby, I think it is OK. In DX, it becomes 42~112.5mm.

I've made a serious comparison for indoor photo taking for both 50mm f1.8 and f1.4 at every aperture a week ago and conclude that f1.8 is more value for money.

18-200mm is good for all purpose except for indoor photo taking at night without flash as the max aperture is just f3.5 at 18mm. If taken 50mm as standard, the max aperture may be somewhere around f4 and not good enough. Said that, a combination of both is prefect for D80, I think.

I use AFS 17-35mm f/2.8, can take it in McDonald Birthday Party without using Flash. You can easy close up to those children and baby.
