They are both great cameras and also very similar specially now the price is pretty much the same. There are some minor technical differences but they are not significant in my mind. In my opinion it will come down to this and see what is more important to you and what is not:
E-P1
+ Behaves like a DSLR with easy access to settings during shooting like adjusting shutter and aperture
+ Solid body build (metal case)
+ Good looking (okay, I know this is kind of subjective)
- No support for electronic view finder. Skip the optical one since it has a very limited use.
- No built-in flash if it is important to you
E-PL1
+ Support for electronic view finder (optional component)
+ Built-in flash (if it is important to you)
- Behaves more like a DC since it is not as easy to change settings during shooting as the E-P1.
- Not as solid build as E-P1
