Speedlite 580 EX is a good choice for two reasons:

1. The only Speedlite support ETTL-II.
2. Output automatically adjusted for crop factor.

Priced at around $3280.

All EX series flash support E-TTL II, not only the 580EX. Support or not determined by body not the flash.

Now 580 EX seems to be the best choice it's a bit too expensive for a beginner like me........ anything under $2k? Or is it really worthwhile to get the 580 EX for the long term?

I bought the 420EX first as I once thought as you do. But I had to buy either 550ex or now 580ex as it offer much more control. 420 is fully auto thus it is not much fun. However, now that I've got a 580, the 420 can be used as a slave unit, which adds more variations to effects I can create.

Your choice for now, but if you get the 420 now, I'm sure you will get the 580 later anyway!!

Is the function can only controlled by the camera body only when comparing to 550EX??
What is the second price of 420EX and 550EX now??

you can reduce power output for 420EX inside 20D, while you cannot add more power within 420EX unit
Sigma EF500 DG Super is alternative choice for 550EX or 580EX sub,
it cost 1600, that is almost the same price as 420EX.
