I started with a D70, switched systems and moved on to 20D, which is a better camera, but the D70 is really more than enough to start with. I advise you to spend some time researching Nikon and Canon's lens range to see which system you prefer and avoid switching systems. Also, bear in mind the fact that D80 is due soon, if you wait a bit longer, you can either get that or get a better deal on a D70s.
