ISO of flims means the sensitivity of the flims to light in old days.
Now, on a digital camera, ISO represent the sentivity of the camera senor to light.
ISO numbers are usually 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, etc.
Higher the number means more sensitive, i.e. less light needs for taking a picture.
Doulbing the ISO number (from 100 to 200)means doubling the senstivity, i.e. ISO 200 takes half of the light ISO 100 does to take a picture.
For example, in an condition, a picture is taken with f/2.8 and 1/50s when ISO 100 is selected. But if you adjust ISO to 400, f/2.8 and 1/200s would take a picture with the same brightness. Your can see 4 times shorter the shutter speed when 4 times the ISO was increased.
High ISO is usually used in dark conditions and in sports events so as to avoid handshake blur and to freeze actions.
The drawbacks of high ISO are increased noise, lost of details in shadow and posterization that give unpleasant look to pictures.
Therefore, lower ISO is prefered is bright conditions, while less noisy, full-detailed and rich-coloured pictures can be produced.

I,ve never took a course, so I couldn't advise you in this respect.
I went to libraryand and borrowed photography books to learnt photography theories.
I mean books not magazine.
There different levels from beginner to advanced level.
I have read a lot at the time I began this hobby. I read english ones as they are usually more choices and more professional.
If you are really interested in photography, you will be reading them happily.
With the theory you learnt, you need to pratice to experience them.
I agree that to take a course would be a short cut. But for the basic theory, you still need to read. This part is usully overlooked by people nowadays.
