Your first question, you are right, the camera really don't know exactly where is the point you want to focus, the camera just guess by itself according to the contrast level of the 9 different points of the object that apppears in your viewfinder.

Your second question is, when it choose the points to consider, it will let you know by showing it with rectangular points on the viewfinder.



Actually, if you use this function, you will find the focus time need much more longer than you don't use it . The other problem is you may get more out focus picture than you don't use it.

This is my experience and I never use this function to take shot by myself.
