your XR500 is full manual and Pentax K mount compatible, not sure if its mechanical or not. but do have the very good feature of mirror lockup.

I think if it isn't broken and not come with a lens, you may like to try some 2nd hand shop and buy one or two big aperture Pentax prime lenses to explore it. It will not be expensive, but you may be amazed by the output quality.

this is a full mechanical body, i.e. you can operate without battery. Anyway, according to the above web site, it use those mecury battery which probably very difficult to find these days for environmental protection reason.

I think its still be good fun to make it work again. :D

Mecury battery not very difficult to find, but no unavilable; you can also use replacement Zine Air battery which has the same voltage.

DO NOT try modern litium/alkanie battery, it may be same size, but not the same voltage.

You can find a lot of good SMC Pentax K mount lens (they are not cheap), or you can buy a K-mount --> M42 adapter and use all M42 lens (cheap and good, some of them)
