It is the hole in the lens for the light goes into the film or CMOS/CCD sensor..

The size of the hole is called APERTURE contollable by the photographers.

APERTURE is represented by numbers called F stops.

The larger the F stop the smaller the hole.
eg. F2.8 allows more lights get in than F8

The standard F stops are 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22
