last time when I visited Egypt. I put a protective filter (UV filter) in front of len to exculde fine dust and sand get into lens. And also use air pump blow off any dust everyday .

You may check the manual for max. and min. operating temperature. Besides being too dusty, it may quit working if it's overheated but unless you expose it under the sun for a long time I don't think it will damage the camera.

Heating may also cause more "hot" pixels than usual.

For low temperature places, besides that the battery life wilI suffer, I heard that in extreme cold temperature, the LCD may crack. (see following links)

An article suggested to use a zip bag to avoid condensation.

沙漠冰川,老柴都有點經驗,最好一鏡一機(防水個種),避免途中換鏡,理想組合係1Ds+17-40/4L!!記得帶埋腳架!!
