1. first impression: score=4
Build quality really, really good. The body of the camera seems sturdy almost like a prodfessional SLR. However, the mounting for the tripod could have been placed better.
2. optics: score=6
Great Leica optics. The optical image stabilizator is very useful, but not as useful as on a DSLR. However, the image stabilization isn't a consistent as could be desired. The reviewers did some testing and found that sharp pictures easily could be achieved without using the OIS - some pictures even turned out unsharp with OIS turned ON.
The conclusion is that OIS never can and never will replace a tripod.
Only few other cameras can match the FZ20's f2,8 aperture.
Zoom works great, but a variable speed adjuster would have been great.
3. Functions: score=4
The camera has many automatic settings like snow, fireworks, etc. The manual controls are GREAT. However the camera lacks functions as: dictaphone, automatic image rotation and RAW-format.
The FZ20 has improved light mesurement, it has centerweighed average mesurement (???).
Video function works with 30 fps but at a lov resolution.
4. LCD and EVF: score=4
2" LCD is a major pro, however, the resolution could have been better. The EVF is well-placed and works fine. The framerate is not as good as and optical viewfinder.
Information shown on the screen could have been better. It would have been useful to have ISO info shown. Other data could have been useful too when the "trigger" is pushed half-way down.
The LCD is very bad in poor lighting which shouldn't be expected of a camera of this class. Also the LCD lacks an anti-reflex treatment.
A pro is that the LCD doesn't freeze when focusing.
5. Battery: score=5
A 680 mAh battery comes with the camera, also included in the package is an extern charger which is MUCH smaller than the one included with the FZ10. The battery capacity is above average. The FZ20 can take 1467 pictures on one charge. Thats above average: Oly C-770 takes 472 on one charge, FZ10 takes 1120 and Konica/Minolta Z3 takes 1228.
6. Autofocus: score=4
Good autofocus, doesn't make a sound. The autofocus is quick on widewith (?) pictures, however, on middle and full tele the autofocus is somewhat slow. This means that the FZ20 isn't as great as could be desired when taking pictures of moving targets.
AF at widewith in seconds: 0,41 sec
Compared: FZ10=1,02 sec, Konica/minolta Z3=0,23 sec, Oly C-770=0,98 sec, Fujifilm s5000=0,62 sec.
AF at 100mm in seconds: 0,99 sec
Compared: FZ10=1,11 sec, Konica/minolta Z3=0,34 sec, Oly C-770=1,00 sec, Fujifilm s5000=0,69 sec
AF at full tele in seconds: 1,57 sec
Compared: FZ10=1,64 sec, Konica/minolta Z3=0,38 sec, Oly C770=1,71 sec, Fujifilm s5000=0,94 sec
The AF in poor lighting was very bad on the FZ10, but on the FZ20 this has been changed. The AF is great in poor lighting conditions. The focus assist lamp is very helpful. When using manual focus the FZ20's LCD is more helpful than the LCD on the FZ10, but a distance scale would have been good. The AF isn't impressing; a considerable amount of the pictures taken was out of focus, the macro, however, is GREAT.
The indication of achieved AF is a lot better on the FZ20 than on the FZ10.
7. Speed: score=5
The FZ20 boots quicker than the FZ10 but the boot time isn't remarkable. The FZ20 boots in 4,6 sec, the FZ10 in 5,6 sec, Minolta Z3 in 3,6 sec, Oly C-770 in 6,0 and Fujifilm s5000 in 4,6.
Shutterlag isn't an issue on the FZ20. Without blitz it's barely mesurable. WITH blitz the FZ20 has a shutterlag of 0,14 sec, Fz10 0,19 sec, Minolta Z3 0,15 sec, Oly C-770 0,28 sec, fuji s5000 0,12 sec.
The FZ20 has an improved burst mode. In 10 seconds the FZ20 manages 10 pictures without blitz, the fz10 6, the Minolta z3 8, Oly C-770 5, fuji s5000 8.
WITH blitz the FZ20 manages 6 pictures, fz10 4, minolta z3 5, oly C-770 4 and Fuji s5000 also 6.
The FZ20 is capable of taking 2 pictures per second until the memory card is full. The FZ20 can take pictures using the TIFF-format.
8. user-friendlyness: score=5
The camera lacks a foolproof "auto"-mode. The camera hasn't automatic rotation of pictures and a manual zoom wheel like the focus wheel would be great. But aside from that, the camera is very userfriendly. The menus are improved over the FZ10.
9. Image quality: score=5
The FZ20 is the boss of sharpness, however, there is some noise. The camera has noisereduction filters.
See comparison of noise here:
http://www.akamera.dk/art.php?artikkelid=10639&side=2
The FZ20 has considerable more noise than other cameras in its class.
The colors are great on the FZ20. The colors can be adjusted in the menus of the fz20 to give the pictures a warmer glow if needed.
But when using blitz the skin of a person can become too redish.
Night shots tends to become underexposed, but shooting in daylight is very well exposed, better than the other cameras in its class.
CONCLUSION:
Total score=5 (out of 6)
Without ANY doubt the FZ20 is the best ultra zoom camera at the moment. It has some improvements and BETTER IMAGE QUALITY compared to the FZ10. The optics are very impressing and the image quality and sharpness is very good. The OIS is useful especially when taking pictures in low light wihtout using the blitz. The LCD can't be used when it is too dark, and in sunlight you are forced to use the EVF.
The FZ20 wants to be a DSLR replacement, but it isn't. The AF is too slow on middle/full tele. Boot time isn't too impressing but overall this camera is GREAT.
IMage quality good, and despite some noise we believe that the FZ20 takes the best pictures compared to all other ultra zoom cameras.
