I was a FZ1 satisfied user.

FZ3 enhanced a lot so I prefer FZ3.
Pls refer to www.dpreview.com which highly recommend FZ3.

if you're solely comparing the performance as a Camera, FZ3 has its edge over S1 in terms of overall quality and respond time, though some of the S1's features (like the 15-sec slowest shutter speed and 2nd-curtain flash) would be more appealing to some users...

However, in the field of Digital, S1 has a few things better than FZ3, it's flipable LCD screen and its rich-feature movie recording functions...not only it can record 640x480 movie @ 30fps, but also its optical zoom is allowed during filiming, that's much more interesting than locking your 10x/ 12x zoom @ a position w/o using it during filiming...

Yet, FZ3's continuous shooting win over S1's a lot - with FZ3's 4fps continuous shooting vs S1's 1.7fps!!

I'd been struggling a lot in these long zoom DCs as each of them really has its selling point... so far I'd still go for S1 for its movie mode is still unbeatable nowadays (and I do have chances to use it often)... yet if you're more concerned w/ photos than FZ3 wouldn't disappoint you so much (although its 8-sec slowest shutter and a missing of 2nd-curtain flash would be little regret...)
