佢唔係L鏡又唔係135mm full frame鏡,價偏高在d囉,價錢接近支EF17-40mm f4L點解唔買支紅圈?

Thanks qaiuswong

I switch from canon to nikon 12 years ago. I used D100 for almost 1.5 years and I am annoyed with D100 of its slow AF speed which is not fast enough to catch moving objects and inaccurate exposure and white balance.

I am considering to buy 20D with the 17-85 lens. The focus length of the 17-40mm lens seems not tele-enougn when fitted into 20D, only reaching 64mm. Anyway, I don't have a decision on the lens yet. Is the quality of 17-40 much better than 17-85? Thanks for further advice.

the quality of 17-40 much better than 17-85 for sure,除非你貪佢既IS,但焦距最長得85mm個IS又好似唔係咁緊要,支鏡你賣番出去紅圈個價會好好多,而且始終覺得EF-S鏡佢冇全力吹谷係Canon既過度鏡所以未必會長久.

Thanks again.

"始終覺得EF-S鏡佢冇全力吹谷係Canon既過度鏡所以未必會長久" may be true. Anyway, anyone used 17-85mm lens. Any comment on its quality and AF speed.

The quality of the 17-85 is not bad at all. The reason that it is not an L is because it is an EF-S format which cannot be use on full frame. There is nothing to do with the optical quality.

Look into the development of the CMOS sensor, the APS-C format is going to last for the next couple of years. In fact, the current technology limit for APS-C sensor is 12-13Mega pixel, so there is still a lot of room to go. I think we will only see more and more APS-C lens coming up considering its size, cost etc.

I once saw a comparison for EF17-40 F4L, EFS 17-85 IS & EF 28-135 IS, but I don't have the link here (in my office). I can post the link here after I return home.

From the link, you can see the photo quality of 17-40L is better, but if you are looking for a lens for travelling "一鏡走天涯" then, 17-85 would be a good choice.

17-40L has a very sharp image on the wide angle and the colour of the picture are much rich than the other two.

17-85 does not have a sharp wide angle as 17-40L, but it focal length is longer, fit for travelling. In fact, this is also a good lens.

At the conclusion of the link, the author said he would prefer the 17-85 + one wide angle prime.

But for me, I chose the 17-40F4L + 50mm 1.8 + 70-200f4L

Hope this can help.

Thanks for fever 20d for the useful link.

Agreed. There is noticeable difference between the 17-85 and 17-40 in colour saturation and sharpness.

I calculate on every oz that I carry when travelling. So it is hard to make a choice. Maybe, wait for OM and Nikon new model in coming months.
