What is the recommended focal range of taking pics of butterflies and birds? 200mm? 300mm? I have a 100mm macro only. So, is a 135mm + 1.4x extender acceptable?

I'm planning to go to Fung Yuen to visit butterflies. What is the best time to take butterfly pics? In the morning or afternoon or sunset?
