I use a DC but I have not used a DSLR before (though I have read many articles on DSLR). Now I have to buy the Canon EF 17-40mm f4.0L USM for someone who is not in HK right now. How should I test the lens when I am actually in the shop? Can anybody help me on this? Thanks.

You may wish to borrow a DSLR/SLR first or have your friends (who have DSLR/SLR) accompanied when you're in a shop. After all, Canon's quality control for its L-lenses is supposed to be reliable, and you may "exchange" a new one usually within 7 days of purchase if the one you bought on your friend's behalf doesn't work properly. In case you have to send the lens by parcel mail, you'd reinforce the packaging. Couriers like DHL may handle this kinda "luxurious" and "fragile" items more safely. Happy shooting and shopping!

Although DHL may be relative safer, it is still possible that the lens may have problem after delievery. Also the cost of sending the lens, including the cost of the lens itself may be more expensive than if your friend buy it locally. If the difference is not too much, may be you should consider asking your friend to buy it locally than by post......

Lens seldom breaks if handled properly like DHL. I would recommend you borrowing a body from your friend and then test it onsite and at home for 1 - 2 days before sending out by mail.

Buying "water" version will be much cheaper than hong good. Lens remains perfect for several years to come especially L lens. Hence, hong goods will not be a must.
