A lot of people would trend to think that Leica have some magic to design their lens and therefore they are better and more expensive. Here I would like to share my understand of how Leica create their lens and why it is expensive.

Lens design is only one part of the magic. The other part of the magic is the manufacturing tolerance which contribute to a large part of the quality of the Leica lens and the cost involved.

Until today, Leica lens are hand made. Leica maintain a very tight quality tolerance starting from the materials (i.e. the optical glass) to every step of the assemble. Each step of the assembly will be subject to countless test to make sure that the lens is up to the highest standard. Test need a lot of time and labour and therefore the cost is so high to produce a lens.

This is also the reason why Leica does not have AF lens because they think that the mechanical tolerance to far too big!

Come par to the normal mass produced lens, the cost involve in testing and the acceptance tolerance is far lower and therefore they can be much cheaper. This is also the reason why there have been a lot of report about "bad copies" of lens.

Leica way is a very old fashion way and not many people really understand the cost behind the Leica brand. So if you are a Leica user, please take some time to appreciate the effort of the Leica engineers put into the lens. After all, we are dealing with highly precise optical equipment when we are using the lens.

BTW, the warranty of the Leica lens is very important as the user should send the lens back to Leica, not only for repair when the lens breakdown but to check and recalibrate the lens after extensive use.

Leica just escape from liquidation last month. Let hope that they can hangon longer.
