large aperture is more fun than IS. Sometime f/4 just cannot freeze the action.

EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM, why?

1. light;
2. useful range in full frame camera;
3. 4.0L is acceptable with IS and canon excellent noise control in high iso

I read form the magazine

is is only useful when the focus is long than 80mm. In other words, IS can only be used between 80 and 105mm. It is not that useful comparing with a lens with F2.8.

which magazine is that?? I don't have any problem with the IS of my 17-85 throughout the entirely focal range... I can take some reasonably sharp pictures at 17mm and 1/4s

好彩!!!我正想買那支17-85 IS USM鏡頭,那麼有什樣鏡可以代替呢(要夠wide,又要中距離)?頭痛極!!!煩給點指引吧.

IS可以讓你在無腳架情況之下仍可用較長快門，大光圈就可以讓你在室內或低光環境下仍可以用較短快門，以捕捉影像。

我舉過的一個例子：如果你要影爆開的煙花，在無帶腳架之下，如果你的手肘有承托，有IS的話都有機會可以影到清晰影像。影煙花景好多時都會闊過80mm焦距，IS一樣有用。

反而你影室內運動場中的運動健兒，就算你有IS光圈太細都無用，因為主體動作太快，好難影到清晰影像，這時大光圈就大派用場。加上影人像時大光圈可以有淺景深效果，都是IS無法做到的。

或者可以這樣說：無IS好多時都可以用腳架替代，但大光圈好多時都無替代品。

Canon and Nikon IS (moving lens to compensate movements of the camera) works in all range but it works more effectively in the long end.

KM's AS (moving the CCD to compensate movements of the camera) also works in all range but it works more effectively in the short end because of the limited CCD movements. At longer range, CCD needs to move too far from the centre.
