I have this config with me.
The Sigma 18-50 F2.8 allow more light go in than the kit lens.

The sharpness is very good at the center even at F2.8.
Under strong light there is slight color fringing ie red on one side and green on the opposite side.
I don't have experience with 'L' lens thus not in a position to compare.
Comparing the MTF charts of www.sigma.com.hk it is one the outstanding Sigma EX lens.

This is my walk arround lens on 350D when not shooting egrets and damselfly.

At this price, I would whole heartly recommend it

Why you need a f/2.8 lens?
In this range, I prefer 17-85 IS (有防手震) + a prime lens (一定大光圈)

我有朋友剛買了這支鏡+350D，我玩過支鏡。

優點:
解像唔錯
對焦快及準，也不算大聲。
是內對焦，用CPL方便。
手感好。
有恆定大光圈f2.8
價錢合理。

缺點:
不是內變焦。
變焦及對焦環太實。
AF/MF轉換鈕過實。
在對焦時，對焦環會轉，如手大，會卡手。
不是EF，當玩全片幅時要重新投資。

我朋友在買之前分別在Canon 17-40 F4.0，Canon 17-85 IS，及這支之間想了好耐，我買了17-40，他買了這支。

I can't review compared on these two lense
17-85 IS about $4200
You could use smaller aperture because of IS and you should use smaller aperture for better image
