I'm planning to get either 24-70mm f/2.8L or 24-105mm f/4L for my Canon DSLR. I use it mostly for family photos and travel.

Which lens is better and better value for money?

I much like 24-105L IS
Because the job of large aperture, I rather prefer to prime lens
24-105L IS has larger range and able to use in dim

I kinda have the same question in mind, but considering the range 105 vs 70, plus IS, I think I will go for 24-105L.

About the larger aperture issue, I think, most of us will not use F2.8 unless it is really dim, or the object is fast moving.

So the question is are U ready to trade 2 F stop for much longer range

If mostly for family photos and travel, go for 24-105 as it is lighter and longer than 24-70, although it is overprice now. f4+IS should be ok for these purposes and it is a good walk-around lens overall. I have 24-70 and it is heavy, but it give good pictures to compensate it..

BTW, what DSLR you use. if 1.6x crop, it is not wide enough for landscape photo. But, it is good fit for 1.3x or FF DSLR....

dslrfever, I know that the 24-105 is selling at $9xxx, you think it'll come down by a lot or just few hundreds?

I plan to use the lens for 20D which has 1.6 crop, will that make it not wide enough that I need something like 17-40mm f/4L plus a tele?

17-40f4 or EFS 10-22
24-105f4
70-200f4 (+1.4ext) or the new 70-300IS
50f1.8

That's not really the serial number. That's a control number like "UTxxxx" (U: place of manufacture; T: year of manufacture, where T = 2005; the first two digits of xxxx represent the month of manufacture)

I once had both 24-70 and 24-105. I personally compared these two lenses and had the following findings:

24-70 over 24-105
-1 stop faster

24-105 over 24-70
-Image stabilization
-slightly better overall image quality at corresponding apertures and focal lengths
-lighter
-better range

I finally sold my 24-70.

eos1dmark2, I went to Wing Sing today and chatted with salesperson in the store. He's concerned that the 24-105 lens being recalled may reflect there are some basic problems with the lens design, what do you think? Also, I intend to use one lens as a carry-around lens, will 24-70mm to heavy to hold for long period time?

With 24-70 and 24-105 both selling at around $9800? Should I wait 24-105 to come down on price? e.g. 17-40mm f4/L is half the price of 16-35mm f2.8/L...
