The largest aperture remain unchanged during zoom.
eg. F2.8 at both 35mm and 420mm

Most zoom lens aperture would be smaller at far end of the zoom.
eg. F2.8 at 35mm, F4 at 420mm

The advantage is the large aperture can be used at the far end of the zoom. In the other words we can use higher shutter speed at longer zoom. This can avoid camera shake and assure the photo is sharp even at long focal length (far end of the zoom).
