I agree with pingu_hk, the lens is so so, but for what you pay for, I think it's not too bad. R3 is a very well spec DC. 28-200mm zoom (plus extra 3.6x digital zoom on top of that), optical anti shake system, cheap in its class, small and light weight.
Early reviews on this camera are very bad in general. But, after Ricoh release several firmware upgrade, recent users seems happy with the R3.
For color, some people like Panasonic, but it's too rich and a bit too CARTOON for me. Canon I think more people like it, and to me, it's a bit like using Fuji film in SLR. For R3, the color is a bit natural, like using Kodak film in SLR, and that's what I like (I always use Kodak film for my SLR).
Some sample photos from other R3 users

Yes, R3 photos are quite noisy, but I'm ok with it (with ISO 200 or below). All compact DC got noice at high ISO (besides Fujifilm I think). But this can be easily remove after PP. I'll say they are still good for 4x6 print with ISO 200 or below (some said 8x10 as well), unless you watch photo with your nose stick on the photograph, otherwise I don't think that will be a problem. I don't print photos personally and just watch photos on my LCD or TV at a distance, so I don't see any problem as well. One user even compare the R3 (at ISO 64) with a Canon S60 (at ISO 50) side by side with nearly same setting, people can't really tell which photo is from S60, which one is from R3.
Since all I need is a sanp shot, compact DC with wide angle at least 28mm with optical anti sake system at this price rage, R3 seems is the only choice so far (ok, Panasonic LX1 got 28mm wide and OIS, but at the same tims have to pay about another $2000, nearly another R3 already). I'll use my DSLR and SLR for serious photo, forget about taking them with a compact DC, no matter what brand it is.
I have to point out that I'm not a R3 owner, but I'm also looking for a compact DC and currently interested in R3 as well, so I just want to share what I found from the net recently with others.
I'll wait for the coming Panasonic FX-01 and see (not the TZ-1. Even though TZ-1 got more powerful zoom range to 10x, but I don't need that. I don't need to zoom far, but I need to zoom wide with optical anti shake system, 35mm is not good enough to me). Unless FX-01 really improve a lot from FX9, otherwise I'll go for R3. And by that time (after FX-01 arrive), R3 may be even cheaper, good for me...... ^_^ Reason is photos from Panasonic can't remove noice by PP, but R3 photos can (quote from the net).
Hope this help.
