There are many choices if u got $5000 . I personally suggest u buy *Konica Minolta A200* (As u might know that KM are not going to produce cameras anymore, but this is not an DSLR, so no need to change lens, which make things easier. The warranty will be covered by Sony). OR *Fujifilm FinePix S9500 * which is more expensive then A200, however, a longer zoom and lower noise. They both got a wide angle to telephoto and a manual zoom lens with manual seeting which are ideal to learn photography!

Your question is too general, people here can't really give you a good suggestion unless you make your question / request a bit clearer and narrow the question down a little bit. You have to understand that DSLR, prosumer DC, compact DC, all can be very use to learn photographing.

Actually if you want to REALLY learn photographing, personally I think you should consider start with film camera rather than digital camera. Saying that because personally I think whne using DC to take photos, there are so many factors happening / image processing behind in the DC's CPU that you don't know what happened. But with a film camera, you really have to learn things nearlly everything, step by step, to get a good photos. (PS: use film camera under manual mode) Got a DC with full manual control maybe is another alternative. But again, there may have lots of other setting in the DC may affect what you've learned.

Start learning photographing with film camera is just my own opinion. I think lots of people may not agree with me, but again, this is just my own opinion for you. Hope this help.

No matter finally what you go for, practice is the key on learning.
