Pls. tell what DX in Nikon lens stand for?

I want but D80, as general purpose use for my family. Which lens amongst the three below is most suitable and with resonable quality? I am not professionand will not print poster size photos.

1) kit lens
2) AF-X DX 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G
3) AF-S 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 G IF-ED

The second one is not ED lens. Will that imporve the PQ?

Simply speaking, DX lens are lens which Nikon specially designed for digital camera DSLR, it can not use in traditional film camera.
ED means 'Extra Low Dispersion'. It can reduce chromatic abberation in your photo.
For DSLR point of view, I prefer AF-X 18-70 DX. I have used this lens before in my D70, the quality is fine and acceptable, also the price is reasonable. Although the kit lens 18-200 can 'travel around the world' , due to the zoom range is so large, the quality will realatively reduce. Besides, 18-70mm is the most popular used range. If you really need to have a longer range for taking bird photo, go to buy another long range lens (e.g.70~300mm) such as Tamron or Sigma, they are cheap and reliable

如果D80是你第一部DSLR，
之前亦沒有用過其他SLR的話，
初玩 Nikon DSLR ，Nikkor AF-S DX 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G 會是一支好選擇。

不過 DX 鏡系，
只是支援 Nikon APS-CCD 的 DSLR，
所以不適合用於菲林相機。

雖然 Nikkor AF-S 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 G IF-ED，
用時適合於 SLR 及 DSLR ，不過由於 APS-CCD 比菲林細小的關係，
視角會被裁去，因此鏡頭的視角要乘上 1.5倍，
會變成 36mm-127.5mm的鏡頭。

如果不介於其他品牌的鏡頭，
Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC 亦是一支優秀的鏡頭。
同樣只適合用於 APS-CCD 的 DSLR 之上。

講銳利度，Nikkor 鏡頭當然是最強。(我黎賣廣告，相信好快又會比人插）
以這個質素，價錢定於 $2100，相當超值。
不過市面上太多人放這鏡頭，買２手比較低玩，可以去找找看。

另一支以 $2600 的價錢，
就能夠擁有一支 Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC，而且質素不錯。
相當低玩。如果資金充足，值得考慮。

If you can afford 28-70 f/2.8, u may want to consider 17-55 f/2.8 DX.

On D80, 17-55 can offer the same view angle as 25.5-82.5.
17-55 offer you a very high PQ.

Personally, i think this is the best mid-range LENs.
