Never compare a zoom lens (even with captial "L") with a prime lens.

If you could find a zoom lens which is comparable to a 50/f.14 at 2.8 and this zoom lens must be classified as SUPER-L lens that cost you hundred thousands dude.

I can understand your point.

But what is the point for paying almost 4 times of a standard lens to get a zoom lens? Isn't it to shift up the quality level of a zoom lens to a standard lens as well as having the convience?
What you are saying is the latter point (paying so much money is ONLY to buy for a convience)?

Too bad I do not have a A16 or a 17-40 L for comparison!
Really like to see the end result of these 3 lens.

Anyone can do so? Love to see!

Cattyman, it's not just convenience. It save you time to change another lens, it eliminates lots of weigh. It's just something loses, something gains. If you are not comfortable with it, well, that's your choice.

The point of paying almost 4 times of a standard lens to get the "17-55 IS" lens is the "ZOOM" ability and the "IS" feature.

A16 and 17-40 f/4L are good lenses. But among the all, 17-55 is the best on APS-C DSLR, regardless to its price.

A16: price, f.2.8, very sharp edges
17-40: L-class, excellent CA control, weather sealed
17-55: IS, f/2.8, very sharp across the entire focal range

凡係鏡頭，最大光圈一定最多球面像差，畫質都係最差的，但收一兩級之後就好好多。所以如果用17-55既F2.8 即最大光圈去同枝F1.4收兩級到F2.8去比，就一定差好遠。厘個其實亦係大光圈鏡頭既價值之一。

As a conclusion:
1). This should be a rather "not bad" zoom lens
2). But never compare the result with a standard lens. Even a so called "L" zoom lens might not be comparable to a standard lens
3). To achieve a good result, never use the max. aperture to shoot.

However, I feel a bit happy when seeing this from man1492

I think you can use the max. aperture on those lenses mentioned or -1/3 f-stop may gives you decent image.

It's not just a feeling, it's true, especially the standard zoom lenses.

I did try to put my old Nikon Prime 50 1.4mm (manual) lens on my "previous" D70s and the color of the whole picture was green (very cold). Since no auto focus nor aperture nor shutter speed could be detected after using old manual lens, I could get a very good picture ocassionally - when the focus was accurate. after touching the picture temperture by using photo editor, that "occasional" picture could turn out very nice.

I using zoom lens in the past.

once I step into the prime lens world~~~
it's totally different.
now I only use prime lens unless very occasional situations.

for myself, I thank quality is much much important then convinence in DSLR. and Prime let you 100% concentrate on layout the picture.

otherwise, why not just use some 28-300 Prosumer DC with video clip !?!?
