Is a 3x optical zoom camera can produce a photo 3 times larger (in area term) than a fixed lens camera at the same resolution?

So, is a 2 megapix camera with 3x optical zoom equal to a 6 megapix fixed lens camera if zoomed to its maximum?

No.

2X or 3X is just the ratio of the focal length of the zoom lens from the tele end to the wide angle end. eg. 35-70=2X; 35-105=3X.
The longer the focal length, the larger the image produced.

Number of pixels is the resolution of the CCD. Higher the resolution, larger the photo can be printed without "格仔" occured.

Lens and CCD are two discrete devices. No direct relationship.

Just another point that I don't real understand. For example, Coolpix 5700 had a 8x zoom, does it means that if I take a photo at its max tele (280mm) end and the other at its widest end (35mm), and crop the one with the widest (35mm) so that it shown the same 內容 (畫面) as the one as the tele. Will the cropped one had pixels 8 times less than one taken with max. tele zoom ?

像素少了,質素較差是對的~~(但是否exactly 8倍小弟沒有計了~)
zoom其實是視角,即280mm視角較35mm細
所以畫面就"放大"了
在zoom時大pixel還是佔優
corp相會減少最後相片的像素從而對質素有影響
(dc的"像素"本身已經少得可憐~)

At 35mm, whole body image on the 5MP CCD.
At 280mm, only the face on the 5MP CCD.

Tele = Larger image on the same CCD/ film plane.

Thanks for answering my question on 光學變焦. It is very kind of you.

But I got another question on flash. I got a small camera with a very weak flash, and photo taken indoor is very poor, but for outdoor photo, the quality is acceptable for me, is it because the weak lighting indoor that make so much difference to the quality of photo. Would that help (at least a bit) if I get a slave flash when shooting indoor. Any recommendation for me except getting another camera.
