The new Kit Len for 400D is not 17-55mm and is replaced by EFS 17-85mm IS USM. The quality of this len is quite good.

I will not chose this len. If you want a this kind of len, i will chose Sigma 17-200 mm OC. But the focus speed is not very fast.

i read some reviews on internet. the image could be a bit soft at the long end beyond 200mm. it would get better if you use smaller aperture like f8. i wonder whether it would give you significant improvement over your kit lens apart from longer zooming.
