Just bought a 430EX for my 400D, when the 430EX is turned on on the camera, I cannot change the aperture in P mode, it is fixed at 1/60 F4.0 all the time no matter if I point to any direction in the office, at home.

But if I point it at very dark place e.g under the desk, it is still fixed at 1/60 but the aperture changes slightly from F2.8 to F4.0

Is it suppose to be like this, when I turn the flash off, I can change the aperture again using the wheel. but it seems fine in Av and Tv mode, my firmware on the body is 1.1.1.

try press the exposure compensation button & turn WHEN the flash is on, see see whether the aperature & change

Thanks, but its just that I cannot reduce the aperture at all in P mode,

With the flash turned off, the 400d allows me to change the aperture again using the wheel. The only thing was able to change in P mode with the 430EX was the Ev level. which is really annoying.

I think the 430EX locks the aperture settings when its in P mode. the only adjustable value is the EV

instruction manual clearly stated that P mode cannot be used with flash, so no problem for your flash and camera present

想玩野就唔應該用P mode + E-TTL，因為咁樣就會乜都交曬比閃燈同相機設定了。

試下玩A/S/M吧！另外，閃燈也可玩A/M mode的。

Thanks for your advice 王迦南 c hing, I rarely use P mode myself but sometimes for faster setting I let the camera do the work for me, usually I use Av mode and Tv mode depeding on which i need at the time. I guess I will just leave out using P mode altogether then.

May I also ask, If I use A/S/M modes on the body, does the flash gun still auto adjust its output through its independent auto mode?

Thank you C Hing for your great help on this, I have never used these new 'intelligent' flashs before, used to use old full manual flashes on film camera when I was still in school, and only been into digital DSLR's for about 1/2 a year because my collage has one and I wanted to get back into photography, but he is alot more experienced then I am.

I guess you do learn something new everyday, anyways thank you for your help! 王迦南
