Most dealers guarantee a exchange period of 7 days, so u are better to try for any possible defects within. After that week the dealer is most likely to refuse ur request of exchanging, so u need to go for warranty to seek repair, but this greatly depends on each brand's policy, some may not offer u repair for dead pixels not exceeding certain amount, others may charge u and spent weeks before giving u another one.

From my experience of repair LCD in Sony Erricsson.
I need to use total 2hr to discuss to the people to change LCD for DEAD pixel. Actually is nearly need use roughly word, and then finally the engineer agree to replace LCD. And totally you need to go to repair 4 times.
1/. one time, leave the mobile
2/. 2 time, the engineer cannot replace LCD
3/. 3 time, leave the mobile
4/. 4 time, the engineer cannot replace LCD, you need to use 2hr to discuss, Finally, the engineer replace the LCD, the time is quick, about 2 min to replace the LCD.

So, if you had read the Nikon DC manual, the manual say if the LCD has several DEFECTICE SPOT(DEAD PIXEL), it is no any problem.

The Manual Nikon say "if you find some defection spot in LCD, it is not the LCD problem, and this will not affect the function of the camera"

Another case is my friend buy a Hong GOOD IBM Thinkpad, he find a DEAD DOT at the LCD after he brought to home. So he bring to the shop for replacement, but the shop say cannot replace if less than 12 dots, and then the shop show a letter that is signed from HK IBM Notice.
The letter say all IBM product e.g. Thinkpad or LCD panel cannot replace if under 15 defective spots.
And finally the shop say if you still want to replace the thinkpad, you need to pay $500 for IBM HK for documentation.
My friend give $500 cash and then the shop replace a new one.
I doubt that the $500 is not give IBM, just give to the shop.
