Generally bigger ccd better photo quality. A bigger ccd give you (1) higher Mp. (2) higher Iso or less noise, example S30 Vs S45. (3) longer lens focal length to obtain shorter depth of field. Most 1/2.7, 3Mp dc is good enough to produce 8R prints, they are compact and convenience for family life recording. But if you has requirements on photography, then a bigger ccd is suggested. Those dc heavier and most expensive.

35mm film is 24mm x 36mm (long side ). The long side of 1/1.8" ccd is 1/1.8 inch instead of 1/2.7'" ccd.s 1/2.7 inch. Total area is bigger.
