That is CCD size. For G3, it is 1/1.8 inch. You can refer to below link about CCD

The bottom line is :" size does matter!!"

It is similar to the size of film.
The larger the film the better.

The smaller the CCD/CMOS the higher signal to noise level.

I am using FZ1 with a 2mp 4.5x3.4mm CCD.
2mp is good enough for 5x7 inches printing but the noise is not acceptable in under exposed area.

In opposite 3mp Canon D30 with 22 x 15mm CMOS and the image is almost noise free even in under exposed area.

Of couse they are not in the same class.
