I've also bought S50 recently and I's still testing the effects in different present and manual modes.
I try to manage the manual (M) mode by adjusing aperture and shutter - pressing the up, down, left, right button - the cheapest and quickest way to get hold of the skills is to practise.
So far I'm satisfied with S50 in various aspects, such as functions and photos quality.
