i am using a v. old minolta dual scan. whats your budget? i suggest the latest minolta elite 5400.
make sure u get one with digital ICE and batch automation.

部機香港係咪冇呀??? 我睇緊部 DiMAGE Scan Dual III, 我最怕係好似d 普通scanner 用左兩三年就冇driver support 最新的 os...... 我用左windows xp 後就冇左部 scanner.........

我希望.....
1. 部scanner 出相唔好太大.... (30 m 算ok, 唔好多過佢.)
2. 可以用在 windows 同 mac.
3. $4000 港紙樓下...
4. 我可以期望的速度係點呢?? 一整筒菲林 (36 張) 可以有幾快. (最大resolution)

為甚麼那兩個功能好重要?? 有甚麼用呢, batch 係指自動工作?? (用photoshop 就用過.) scanner 要來做甚麼呢??

scan dual mark I is extincted i am afraid, and thats extractly why i am still using win98se because of the driver support

scan dual III is out in the mkt for around 6mth, i think driver support should not be a problem.

batch scan is useful, as you just slot in a strip of 6 frames, then it will scan them one by one, so e.g. if u have a roll of 36ex. u just do this exercise 6 times. and depends on what rez. you want the picture to be scanned at, at full 2800dpi rez. i reckon it will take about 2 min per frame, so a strip of 6, will take u, say conservatively 15 min.

simple calculation, you should look at an hour to an hour and a half to finish a full 36ex. batch scan is good as u need to change the strip only 6 times, but if without such a function like mine, it will tide me up the whole day to do the scan (in fact, after long trip, i will take me a week on and off to get my picture scanned).

digital ICE is the functions automatically clean up the dust / scratch mark in your scanned output, which reduce a lot of your time to clone or healling brush in PS afterwards, but you may just like to do some colour, level adjustments and sharpening at the post-process stage.

so if i am going for another film scanner, digital ICE and batch is a must.

scan dual III is good value, and it should supersuede the function of scan dual II which already have batch scanning. but it doesn't has digital ICE, instead it bundle a pure software solution which is found to be not very useful by some photo magazines, which is the only thing i miss in my opinion.

besides, technically, its 2800dpi 16 bit A/D conversion, which are more than enough. at full rez. it produce an output of 60-70MB, or 11M pixel to DC standard, so i have no complaints about this.

further info. on digital ICE, it employ an infrared channel to scan the surface of the film, and if any uneven points found, it will record the location down and address it as dust or ding, so when the real scan reach that address, it will use software to interpolate the bad point by using other good areas around, its found to be very usable. side effect is time for scan will be much longer and at those bad spots, image will be a little softer but barely noticable in practice.

all-in-all, i recommend minolta elite II, which have both digital ICE and batch scan and should support both windows an mac. cost wise should not exceed 4K by a lot.

coolscan 4 and scan elite 2 are same grade, and priced v. similar at JPY 63,00 in Japan.

2800 dpi with digital ICE, bigger difference is scan elite has 16 bit AD but nikon 12 bit.

my friend using nikon 4 ed told me it use a roller system to eat in the film strip directly, which he is quite worry if there is any mistracking, the film will be damaged inside but lucky so far it hasn't happened.

for these 2 reason, i will choose minolta la.

For 5400, i am also not living in HK, so i don't know if its available in HK or not and at what price. but just double checked, its even not started selling in Japan. But the listed price in Japan is slightly over JPY 100K. so i reckon when it hit the street, it should be priced at around HKD 5K+ anything over 6K is ripe-off. In UK where i live (unfortunately), its listed price is GBP 600, and discount even in online shop is very very slim.

it should be available in June. in my opinion, quality-wise its able to challenge its multi PRO big brother which cost almost double. If you are after hi-end f-scanner without the need for medium format compability, this kid provide exceptional value.
