Under the spell of Tank Man


I have written about Hoog Catharijne before in an earlier
blogpost, especially about its aesthetics. It's not exactly a
feast for the eyes. That made the arrival of Call of the Mall
extra refreshing. Call of the Mall was an art event full of
exhibitions and performances. One sculpture which made an
impression on everyone is 'Tank Man' by Spanish artist
Fernando Sánchez Castillo. 'Tank Man' makes you question,
it gives a sense of familiarity and it arouses curiosity. Utrecht
is under the spell of Tank Man.

The wax sculpture should be familiar to everyone. It's based
on the man who obstructed a column of tanks on Tiananmen
Square in Beijing on 5 June 1989. Although the identity of the
man is still unknown, Castillo gave the man a face. And again
it made people stop. 'Tank Man' stood in the middle of the
stream of shoppers, literally stopping them in their path. It
was so effective, that people wondered if it was real, if it was
a living statue. But, convinced that it wasn't, people started
touching it, poking its delicate wax skin. It was then decided to
add a fence around it and an security officer to prevent
people to poke it. Although an understandable decision, it lost
a bit of its power.

'Tank Man' was recently bought by the Centraal Museum.
Initially the idea was to let it stay where it was, but I can
imagine that the safety of the piece couldn't be guaranteed
and the cost to keep it safe would eventually become too high.

Hopefully, Call of the Mall or something similar will return to
Hoog Catharijne. Currently the stream of shoppers is back,
unobstructed in their path from shop to shop, unaware of
Tank Man. The spell seems a bit diminished, but I like to think
that Tank Man's spirit still lingers in Hoog Catharijne...

64屠城才最具娛樂性，看到變色龍變完又變，看到支那人的奴才狗賊本性盡現，看到大中華膠的思維錯亂，看到愛國愛黨的崇洋媚外心。。。。
只可惜支那人不重歷史也沒有品味，對支那人來說這只不過是一段可以改了又改的羅生門！對文明西方世界這是一個長篇史詩式的經典笑料，寫了下來隨時取得諾貝爾文學獎
