It is not necessary apply to "L" only, in the old days when all lenses were produced in Japan all lenses have this code but recent years Canon moved some of the lenses production out of Japan.

I have a 50mm macro brought some 20 years ago have the code of UB.

And recently, I brought a 35mm f2 but it still have the code UX. However, some other prime lenses 50mm f1.4 and 85 f1.8 did not have any these code, I think most USM lenses but not L lens would not produce in Japan, rather some old design prime lens used AF motor still produce in Japan.

Of course, EF-S lens will not have code even though the expensive 17-55 f2.8 IS.

There are two sets of number, first set, serial number written on the Len & the product code written on the black coloured len ring. The words are written in grey coloured very diffcult to find out.
