I am thinking to buy either 70 to 300 mm or 80 to 400mm!

Which one is better and more cost effective?

Different price level and different size, I think very difficult to compare directly.

IMO, if you have the budget and don't mind carry a heavy len, go for 80 - 400mm. It can give you sharp image upto 300mm. ^_^

Especially you want to shot birds, etc,

70-300mm VR has good performance in AF speed, VR and picture quality. I think it has higher price-performance than 80-400mm VR.

萩原俊哉在他的【Nikon虎之卷】裏，比較了包括70-300mm G、70-300mm VR、80-400mm VR和小黑五70-200mm VR等多支中距離原廠鏡。

他的結論似乎是80-400mm VR在性價比方面頗具優勢，此鏡較小黑五廉宜，然而，成像十分之佳。更重要的是：此鏡與小黑五不一樣，她的遠攝端最大光圈雖然是5.6，但此光圈是真正可用的光圈。

擁有小黑五的師兄請勿罵我，要罵應罵萩原俊哉哩！

說得沒錯呢！ 曾幾何時小弟也是用80-400mm VR打雀仔的，開盡光圈效果也相當不錯。
