I suggest you buy D60 if u just want to try try DSLR (note that D60 must use AF-S lens or lens with motor to get autofocus), while D80 can use old lens without motor.

I use 2 D40X body in recent trips, one 18-55VR (kit lens of D60) + 55-200VR

The direct jpeg of D60 (& D40X) beats my other Canon's 20D, 350D, 400D

BUT if u want a higher resolution, you may buy 450D

Forget about 1000D, a 2nd hand 400D body+18-55IS is much worthwhile than 1000D

Conclusion

D60 > 450D > D80 > 1000D

in terms of both price over performance
