before I answer your question, I think you need to provide us more about what you actually need from the gear.

Are you getting that for hobby? Is that for job?

D90 & D700 are getting you into different photography path. D90 is a DX camera, the N17-55 is the BEST DX lens available now. If you are getting D90 but you are thinking about an upgrade to FX later on down the track, you need to buy FX lens again to achieve the best result.

So ... base on your choice between DX & FX camera. You need to decide which path you wanna go for now.


Personally, I use D80 before and now I move to FX world with D700 & D3s.

D700 is a great camera!!! A HUGE difference with D90.

It is so much faster, so much solid, so much smarter than D90. Also the ability to shoot without flash at night as well. I am talking about the focusing speed, accuracy of white balance ... Also D700 is weather seal but D90 is not. FX is a whole new world and give you a lot more room for skill improvement.


So even though D90 package seems very tempting for you now. But you have to make the right decision now for your long term benefit. It is a very expensive upgrade from DX to FX later on if you have lots of good DX lens.

Lost connection with HIM lately, so I may need to change my icon soon.

Package 1 is what I have now. Package 2 is my crazy thought of selling my Pkg1 to go into. For hobby, not for work, but I want the FX ISO performance. Also wonder if I need to get N24-70 for the D700 to achieve the competitive PQ of D90 + N17-55. If that's the case, I will hold off because of the price.

If the 50.8 + D700 can get me competitive PQ, then I may move forward for now. Then add other lens later.

D700 + N24-85 is OK, not necessarily N24 - 70 , unless you always crave for big aperture (f/2.8) zoom

Tell you about my combo now
- D700 with 50 1.8
- D3s with 24-70 2.8

D700 with the 50 1.8 is a very useful combo and the size is small as well. I can carry that with me everywhere, everyday, all the time. The photo quality is great as well.

D3s with N24-70 f/2.8is mostly use for working purpose.

Both providing me great photo quality.


Somehow I absolutely agree with 鏡保值啲.

So if you are really moving to the FX world now, I will suggest you to sell the D90 and N17-55 when it still worth some good value. But you should keep the SB600 for some creative lighting purpose.

Once you are into FX, you will never look back. FX not just giving you a better ISO range. The D700 is sharing the same sensor and chip with D3!!!! you can image how fast the camera will be. If you can planning to use and enjoy D700 asap, then why not getting it? But if you don't need that immediately, price always goes down with camera body.

Keep adding oil and saving up for the N24-70. It will give you the best result. No lens come close to the 2470 optical quality.

When you have enuf budget for body upgrade, trade your D90 and keep the 17-35.

If you get 17-55, you would need to change the lens again.

I also have D700, 17-35 and 70-200 now. I am planning to get one mid-range lens such as 24-70 or 50 1.8. 24-70 it is sure win than 50 1.8, but I want to know that 50 1.8 does same as 17-35? OR to get 50 1.4D to obtain more PQ?

I have both 24-70 f/2.8 and the 50 f/1.8.

It does making a HUGE difference with the 24-70 on D700. But size wise, I am using 50 1.8 on my D700 for daily shooting around, and 24-70 on D3s for work.

I haven't try the 17-35 in person so I guess I am not in the best position to comment on the lens or making any comparison. Sorry about not able to help on this.

But if you are talking about 1.4 & 1.8 both are good lens.

I agree with this in some sense.

Maybe like 10 to 15 years back, prime lens's quality is way better than zoom. But Nikon is making some great lens like 24-70 f/2.8, and the full zoom range is very usable (I should say, great image quality instead).

Quality is better than 50 1.8.

Considering that there we are not always allow to move around for taking photos, this is when a zoom coming in handy.

So if the budget is allow, get the 24-70 f/2.8 and I can pretty much guarantee that will be one of the best lens you even find in your life.

Still craving for D700....., and did some research on the N24-85. That could be the way to go for now.

Give up D90 and 17-55

Get into FF world with D700 and N24-85
